The waters around Zakynthos surprise with their intensity and variety of colors. Depending on the time of day, the angle of light, and the depth, the sea takes on shades ranging from deep navy blue, through azure blue, to a light, almost milky turquoise. The most famous place to admire this palette of colors is the famous Shipwreck Bay (Navagio), surrounded by white cliffs that further emphasize the contrast of the water. There are plenty of such coves here, but not all of them contain this type of wreck, so not all are as famous. In some places, the sea is so intensely colored that it’s hard to believe it’s a natural effect. Of course, no one adds dye to the sea, just as no one dragged a wreck to the beach in the bay (I refer you to the article from October). Several factors are responsible for this unusual hue. Primarily, these are the purity and clarity of the water, which allows the sun’s rays to illuminate the depths. Light reflecting off the light, limestone bottom and the particles in the water disperse, creating an effect of extraordinary blue and turquoise. Furthermore, the presence of limestone rocks, which seem to filter the water, the lack of large rivers to deposit sediments, and the high salinity ensure the water remains remarkably clear. The high salinity also prevents the development of microorganisms, known as phytoplankton, which are abundant in the Baltic Sea. The water is truly extraordinary. And although I’ve seen these places hundreds of times, the ballet of colors of the Ionian Sea never ceases to amaze me. It’s a phenomenon of blue hues that lingers in your memory and heart for a long time.
